Harvesting meat

We have butchered 5 young Cornish roosters in the last 2 days, so the freezer is stocked again. Every time we do it, I reflect on how much better these chickens' short lives were than the chickens people have to buy at the supermarket. It is hard to kill them, sure, but what about this?
Should we be eating meat at all if we are not willing to kill it ourselves? I have had many people tell me (proudly!) that they would become vegetarians if they had to kill their own meat. Well, yeah, I guess they should. I find it a warped sensibility to be proud that you cant/wont kill your own food but eat it as long as you dont have to acknowledge the animal it came from.
